UMK DEVELOPS COCONUT GERMPLASM PLANTING PROJECT

 

The coconut germplasm planting project was officiated by Prof. Ts. Dr. Arham Abdullah, as one of the high-impact projects capable of generating significant income for the university in the future.

According to Prof. Ts. Dr. Arham, the University aims to make the coconut germplasm construction project at the ATP farm a reference centre, research hub, and the best coconut planting training centre for the community and agricultural entrepreneurs in Kelantan.

He mentioned that the funding for this project is the contributions under the Lembah Baraqah project, presented by the Chairman of the Kelantan State Agricultural, Agrofood Industry, and Commodity Committee, YB Ust Hj Tuan Mohd Saripudin Tuan Ismail, amounting to RM20,000, in October 2020.

"The coconut germplasm plot will showcase several coconut varieties in Malaysia at UMK in the future.

"Among the coconut varieties planted are mataq, sungai gulang-gulang (SGG), tacunan pandan, mareela, cerani, and others. This planting will involve 18 to 20 trees of each variety, and it is expected that within three years, the coconut trees will bear fruit," he said.
