UMK DISCOVERS HIGH-VALUE ROCKS THROUGH THE INTERNATIONAL GEOMAPPING JELI 2021 PROGRAMME

JELI I A total of 48 Geoscience students, Faculty of Earth Sciences (FSB), Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK) and 36 students majoring in Geology from universities in Indonesia participated in the Jeli International Geomapping Programme (IGJ) 2021 in Jeli, Kelantan and surrounding areas, recently.

The programme organised by the Department of Geosciences, FSB in collaboration with the UMK International Centre received participation from the Bandung Institute of Technology, Jambi Universitas , Universitas Tadulako, Universitas Padjadjaran, Universitas Hasanuddin and Universitas Gadjah Mada.

International participants followed a virtual study where UMK students made video calls to international participants to explain the rock findings from the field mapping study.

Head of the FSB Geoscience Department, Dr Wani Sofia Udin, said the IGJ exploration this time recorded one of the most important findings from the study, namely the discovery of kecubung pieces or its scientific name, amethyst is of high value found in several mining locations.

She said, from the study, the participants also found pieces of quartz rock and the discovery of drag fold, which is the geological effect of the structure on rocks that are very rare.

"Also found are pyrite type rocks and volcanic rocks where with the discovery, students can study morphology and update the geological map of the Jeli area through mapping activities carried out.

"This study gives important results to students, especially to provide exposure to geological mapping and application in this fieldwork," she said at the Closing Ceremony of the Jeli International Geomapping Programme (IGJ) 2021, at the Main Hall, UMK Jeli Campus, on 12 April 2021.

To make the programme a success, the participants were divided into 12 groups and placed in the study areas around Jeli, namely Bukit Jeli, Bukit Salor, Kampung Lawar, Kampung Sungai Rual, Lata Chenai, Sungai Pergau, Sungai Renyok and Sungai Tadah.

According to Dr Wani Sofia, the participants, including international students who participated in the virtual field study, actively involved in the process of exchanging lessons or understanding.

She said the participants were given assignments related to the basic subjects of mapping to learn, and as a result of the research expedition on the rocks, they managed to discover some of the latest minerals.
