ONLY FIVE PERCENT OF PUBLIC UNIVERSITY STAFF EXPERIENCE PSYCHOLOGICAL ISSUES

KOTA BHARU 18 October 2023 I Only five percent of the staff at Public Universities (UA) from various service schemes are identified to be experiencing psychological issues, and the situation is still under control.

The Chairperson of the Public University Staff Psychology and Counselling Management Committee (JKPPsiKUA), Ms. Fazielah Mohamad, stated that these individuals were identified after the occurrence of the Covid-19 pandemic two years ago.

She mentioned that there are various factors contributed to these psychological issues, including work pressure, financial problems, family and health issues, lack of motivation, and training.

"Therefore, individuals facing these problems have been provided with referral services from internal professional counsellors.

"In addition, various well-being and mental health programmes and modules have been implemented involving all university staff by teams of counsellors in all universities using various methods and interventions in the process of assisting and supporting the individuals concerned," she said at the National IPT Counselling Psychology Conference 2023, Entrepreneurship Hall, UMK Kota Campus, Pengkalan Chepa, Kelantan, today.

The conference, themed ‘Memperkasa Idealisma Membimbing, Teras Kesejahteraan Masyarakat Madani’, was inaugurated by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni), Prof. Dr. Mohammad Ismail.

Also present were UMK Registrar, Mr. Khairul Eruwan Abdul Halim, and also UPM Registrar, Mr. Muhazam Mansor.

A total of 200 Psychologists and Professional Counsellors serving in 20 Public Universities (UA) attended the National IPT Counselling Psychology Conference 2023 hosted by Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK).
"This conference is a joint effort by the Committee of Psychology and Counselling Management for Public University Staff (JKPPsiKUA) and the Staff Development Section, Talent Management & Excellence Division, UMK Registrar Office.

According to Prof. Dr. Mohammad, this conference brings participants to explore the sharing of knowledge and development of ideas related to guiding initiatives not only among professionals in the field of psychology and counselling but reaching beyond every dimension of society.

He said that guiding idealism is indeed important, especially as society is often entangled with psychological, counselling, and mental health issues every day.

"I hope the impact of this conference can provide many benefits to all participants and strengthen the function and role of the counselling and psychology profession in the efforts to help the community with issues related to mental health," he said.

In conjunction with the conference, a ‘Segmen Bersama Selebriti” was also conducted by Amin Idris, featuring a motivational lecture ‘Kesihatan Mental: Mengurus Emosi’, di Dewan Keusahawanan, UMK City Campus on 19 October 2023."
